Today is the International Day for Monuments and Sites 🏜️

Within the United States there is 133 national monuments including Avi Kwa Ame, Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni (known to many as the Grand Canyon), and Bears Ears.

National monuments are areas or sacred sites that have been given permanent protection by Congress or the president through the use of the Antiquities Act, which was signed into law on June 8th, 1906.

We are advocating for the same protections for:
- Chaco Canyon
- Kw’tsán
- Oak Flat
- Chuckwalla

Take the time to learn about the movements around these important places and see how you can add to the advocacy!

Native Organizers Alliance joins our communities across Turtle Island in mourning the loss of actor and advocate Cole Brings Plenty (Mnicouju Lakota).

Cole was a talented young man who used his platform to advocate for the Truth and Healing Commission on Indian Boarding School Policies Act and partnered with the Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition to educate lawmakers on the importance of passing the bill.

Our communities continue to face unjust and disproportionate murders. Cole’s untimely death is being honored by raising awareness for the #MMIP epidemic with #BraidsforCole.
“Native voices deserve to be heard and this decision helps ensure that happens,” said Jacqueline De León, Staff Attorney at @nativeamericanrightsfund in regards to the Montana Supreme Court’s ruling yesterday that found that two state laws inhibit Native participation in elections, which ultimately violate’s the state’s constitution.

The plaintiffs in the case, filed as Western Native Voice et al. v. Jacobsen et al., included Western Native Voice, Montana Native Vote, The Blackfeet Nation, the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Reservation, the Fort Belknap Indian Community, and the Northern Cheyenne Tribe.

They were represented by the Native American Rights Fund, American Civil Liberties Union, ACLU of Montana, and Harvard Law School’s Election Law Clinic.

Earlier this month, a United States federal court ruled that the government can transfer this ancestral land to a mining corporation that plans to obliterate the sacred site.

While the San Carlos Apache Tribe and Apache Stronghold plan to appeal this ruling to the Supreme Court, we can help right now by supporting the Save Oak Flat from Foreign Mining Act, which would permanently protect the area and honor Tribal sovereignty.

This law needs to be passed quickly in order to protect this sacred place and defend our constitutional right to practice our beliefs, as well as our inherent right to self-determination over our lands and waters.

Please tap the link in our bio and tell your congressional representative to support this important legislation.
